In this class, we will go in-depth on a single project that includes such essential dressmaking techniques as sewing darts, linings, zippers, and set-in sleeves. The Christine Haynes Emery Dress is the perfect backdrop for growing your skills. This vintage-inspired knee-length dress features a lined bodice, zipper closure, and a series of bodice darts for the perfect fit. In addition to construction techniques, we’ll review basic principles of fit and opportunities to alter the pattern to make it just right for you.

Supplies You'll Need


  • The Christine Haynes Emery Dress pattern
  • Fabric and notions as specified in the pattern. The Emery Dress works great in a wide variety of light-to-medium-weight woven fabrics, from quilting cotton to options with more drape.
  • A sewing machine that you know how to use
  • Bobbins and needles for your machine
  • A measuring tape
  • Tools for measuring, marking, and cutting your fabric (a simple ruler, pencil, and sharp scissors will work)
  • An iron and ironing board or surface
